On the 10th of Januari, we went to the clinic in Sleeuwijk (specialized in everything arround breeding) for an ultrasound. And yes, they immediately saw puppies! They then first showed us a heartbeat of one of the puppies and that gave Leo and me tears in our eyes. This was such a beautiful wonderful moment! Little hearts, beating in Biscuit’s belly, that is something special! They then tried to count the amount of puppies and they counted a few times and counted 10. So in approx. 4 plus weeks, we expect Biscuit to give birth to approx. 10 puppies. We are over the moon!
On Tuesday the 11th of December, the veterinary practice Sleeuwijk phoned us to tell us that Biscuit’s ovulation took place (her progesteron level was 7,6 ng/ml). We had her blood tested on the progesteron. So Tuesday night Leo, Biscuit and I took the car and travelled to Gramzow. It was a 12 hour journey, we arrived Wednesday late afternoon, but it was worth every minute! Of course I met Jack before, but I was really happy to see him again. He is such a fantastic dog, of such wonderful type and temperament! For Leo it was the first time that he saw Jack in real life so I was really happy that Leo was over the moon with Jack. Biscuit and Jack played on Wednesday afternoon/night, but no mating took place. So we returned the next morning, Biscuit was in so much hurry to get to her ‘prince charming’ and within 2 minutes (after saying “hi, how are you”) a perfect mating took place. On Fridaymorning they mated again and after that we travelled back to Zoetermeer.

L(Low) U(Urine) A(Acid) Dalmatiers.
In 1973 is er in Amerika een project gestart door Dr. Robert Schaible waarbij hij een AKC (American Kennel Club) geregistreerde Pointer reu heeft gekruist met een AKC geregistreerde Dalmatier teef, met als doel het defecte ‘urinezuur metabolisme gen’ te repareren. Je kunt hier meer over uraatgruis bij de Dalmaat te weten komen.

Dit LUA of backcross project loopt tot op de dag van vandaag. Er zijn diverse nakomelingen van dit outcross project naar Europa gehaald en inmiddels wordt er door een diverse Engelse, Franse en Duitse fokkers gefokt met honden uit dit backcross project. De nakomelingen van het backcross project worden nu ook in Europa gekruist met de zogenaamde raszuivere Europese Dalmatische Honden en waarbij een aantal van deze pups het Low Uric Acid gen dragen.
Alle LUA nakomelingen zijn hetrozygoot voor dit LUA gen. Ze dragen dus 1 copy van het normale urinezuur gen [U] en ze dragen 1 copy van het recessieve gen [u]. Hun genotype is [Uu] en hun fenotype is dat zij een normaal urine metabolisme hebben, wat we “Low Uric Acid” (LUA) noemen en wat in de praktijk inhoud dat zij geen uraatgruis in de urine hebben. Alle eerder bij de Kennel Club geregistreerde Dalmatische honden (de zogenaamde ‘raszuivere’ Dalmatische Honden) zijn homozygoot recessief oftewel, ze hebben twee copieen van het recessieve gen [u], wat hen het genotype [uu] geeft en het fenotype “High Uric Acid” (HUA) geeft en wat in de praktijk inhoud dat zij uraatgruis in hun urine hebben. Wanneer je dus een LUA nakomeling [Uu] kruist met een HUA Dalmatische Hond [uu] zullen in theorie de helft van de pups [Uu] zijn en de andere helft [uu]. Op dit moment zijn er maar een paar Dalmatische Honden die [UU] zijn en dus twee copieen van het normale urinezuur metabolisme gen hebben. We hopen dat er meer van deze [UU] geboren zullen gaan worden wanneer we meer LUA met LUA nakomelingen kunnen gaan kruisen [Uu] x [Uu].
Fenotype: waarneembare kenmerken. Genotype: verzamelingen genen van het individu. Met andere woorden, een Dalmatische Hond met het fenotype LUA of [Uu] maakt geen uraatgruis meer aan.
Ik wil in de nabije toekomst ook mee participeren in dit project. Ik hoop voor een dochter van Biscuit een LUA reu gaan selecteren (van het Uu fenotype is en dus geen uraatgruis meer aanmaakt). Ongeveer 50% van de puppy’s die uit deze combinatie geboren zullen worden, zullen geen uraatgruis meer aanmaken. Zodra ik meer informatie heb over mijn toekomstplannen, zal ik dit hoofdstuk bijwerken.

Finally…..! Biscuit is in season. I already saw something yesterday evening and I was for 95% sure, Biscuit is in season. This morning it was 100% clear, Biscuit is in season. On Monday december 3, we will travel to Sleeuwijk to have her progesteron level checked for the first time. Oh my, this is exciting!

Pinkel, October the 5th 1997 – September the 14th 2012
Last Friday at 18:10 hours Leo and I had said goodbye to our little precious sweet girl Pinkel. Yesterday we had the Dutch NCDH Clubshow in Arnhem. The weather was beautiful, the location was perfect, yes, we really had a very nice day. Biscuit got an Excellent in Open Class and a very nice show report from the judge, Mr. Sloot.
